Hoop house being built

The hoop house structure is the core of the building; without it, there would be no greenhouse. There are a few major metal components that make up the structure. They all play a vital role in keeping the hoop house stable and secure. The hoop frame is the most recognizable part of any hoop house. It is the arching tubing running across the structure. The tubing is 1 3/8" x 10' 6". The hoops are held in place with a greenhouse cross connector, commonly referred to as purlin brackets. The purlin is the tube running parallel with the greenhouse towards the top of the structure. The purlin brackets connect the arching hoop frame with the purlin, stabilizing the structure's top. The bottom end of the arching hoops is fitted into ground poles. The ground poles are 1 5/8" x 5'.

Ground poles can be driven in with a ground post driver. Once the ground poles are put in place, a piece of lumber can run the length of the greenhouse. This is for installing the wire channel where the plastic film will be locked into place. The channel can be drilled directly onto the piece of lumber. This area of the greenhouse that runs the entire length is called a hip rail. The hip rail is vital to anyone who wants ventilation in their hoop house. The rail is where the roll-up sides go up to. The ventilation works by using a piece of EMT conduit to help roll up the plastic grow film.

Many more types of hardware make up a greenhouse structure. A lot of people like to use floor flanges to help stabilize the base of the greenhouse. They can be drilled directly into concrete for a secure installation. wood-to-steel adapters are a must when using attaching wooden parts to the steel frame. They come in plenty of sizes and types to fit anywhere. Clamps are another vital part of any hoop house. They connect the framing together on the ends and in the structure's middle (line clamps). The work by joining vertical and horizontal tubing together.
